Traveling is so awfully overwhelming isn't it? And worthwhile, as I can see above. I'd love to head that way in the world, but dread the travel length! Still, my wife and I are thinking of going to France next summer, in celebration of my PhD, and renting a small something somewhere for two weeks before tickets get too outrageous (and I need 3 days at least to overcome international jet lag). And don't you just assume flights will be delayed anymore? Even a quick 60 minute hop to Chicago from Lincoln is often delayed. When we came back from MX in January, customs took us 3 hours, which left us 15 minutes for dinner at McDonalds. No beer. No pub. No shopping. Glad you're home safe and hopefully able to avoid the tropical storms.

What a beautiful city, filled with very friendly people from all accounts I've heard. Did you find that to be true? I'm sorry you missed the garden, but what a wonderful architectural tour you've treated us to.

Good luck with hurricane preparedness. You're in my thoughts.

For me, the problem with traveling is that there's never enough time to see and experience (to the extent I'd like to) all the cool places. I keep thinking I'll go back some day. Bet you're feeling the same way (or will be once you're all settled back in). Glad you had such a great time!

Benjamin, this was indeed a crazy-long trip. About 46 hours return trip, due to delays. I think this week I just started sleeping back on east coast US time! I think your trip to France sounds wonderful - and you should definitely do it in celebration of your PhD. I think I took off five days after I defended for a postdoc - and that was just plain stupid of me.

Pam/Digging: Yes - everyone was really nice, for sure. And funny - we were just there for less than a day - but you did get the sense that it would be a fun city to come back and visit for alot longer. And it was beautiful.

Pat, I already miss Austraia! After being there for a day, we all realized that it was much too spacious of a place, and who was foolish enough to think that a few extra days tacked onto a busy conference schedule was sufficient? Nuts. But we did get a good taste of the place - and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Sydney is a great city. We spent the early part of this week down there. I was thrilled with the way Qantas treated my wife and myself. Our flights back to the States were all on time, and the flight was very smooth. Sorry to hear yours was delayed, but hey, what a great city to be stuck in a few extra hours.

Little Mike, I loved Sydney too, for the 6 or so hours I spent there. I'd definitely go back - the whole place had just a great feel to it. Qantas overall was a great experience (can't even compare to the US - ugh) - it just ended up giving us a crazy-long return travel itinerary. I was beat for awhile after that. But Sydney - wonderful!
