That color sure tops the old Nora B as far as I'm concerned- wow!

I have some Black Barlows in my garden, but they won't bloom until early May or even later. Can't wait!

OK... these have my attention.

Absolutely gorgeous, but I must admit when I first skimmed the name, my brain automatically registered it as Aguilera. . . as in Christina.
Does anyone know how to shut off the internal "autocorrect"?

Heather: here's how: (I know I harp on about the scientific names endlessly but...) The problem is that one word means something to you and other doesn't. This is natural. So... Aquilegia is from the latin Aquila... EAGLE. Aquiline. Aquilegia means Eagle's Claw.
Now THAT'S something to remember, huh? Not Christina Aguilera but a common (vulgaris - vulgar) Eagle claw. These are the Columbines. It is a reference to the flower petals. Eagle Claws.
Nice huh? My ex (and pretty much everyone) thinks I am ridiculous, but I happen to think Eagles in my garden make life more interesting. That's just me.
You'll never look at this plant the same way again. And the next time you see the word, you might say "Aha!" EAGLES! CLAWS!
Or Not.

Annie: I love Nora Barlow though (one of my favorite pics was taken of her: http://talesfromthelaboratory.typepad.com/tales_from_the_microbial_/2006/04/charles_darwins.html). I know, I know, I need to figure out how to do links in comments. But geez, I just figured out how to do them on my sidebar, and too much shouldn't be expected of me at once!
Carol: I just have one. I have intermittent luck with columbines - but I love them, and miss how they behaved in my Michigan garden. So sometimes they last a few years, and then disappear, and I start all over again. I need to try a few varieties native to the south.
CC: You are plant obsessed (I'm not saying that this is a bad thing). Oh...and word obsessed (but isn't it cool that we are now linked on the history of the delphiniums site? Sort of?).
Heather: See The County Clerk's comment below yours...and - I swear sometimes I think I edit for a living because I review so much, and I know that I've been working too much when I start editing newspaper or magazine text. It's annoying as hell to not be able to shut it off.
