The second live oak scheduled for a trim on Tuesday is a much smaller one, at least in comparison to the other five in my garden. When I first moved into this place over twelve years ago, it seemed like a small tree along the drive. It had a pile of dirt on one side of it, a pile that I always expected was the result of excavating a trench for the water and sewer lines.
Now, twelve years later, Spirit is usually parked under this tree (covered with a tarp), and the pile of dirt has been turned into an experimental fern bed (Autumn, Holly, Royal, Painted, etc) - a bed which is slowly expanding in the increased shade. I need to divide and re-arrange some of the ferns before the heat of the summer - which is something I'll do once the tree gets a trim. During a tropical storm a few years ago, part of a large branch of this tree splintered off - that branch needs some work, and the tree needs to be trimmed of numerous small dead branches. It will open up the tree alot, and more light will probably filter down to the fern bed, but I don't think will be a problem. The ferns do seem happy there. Anyway, Spirit got moved this morning, across the street to a neighbor's yard, in preparation for Tuesday.
