Why do we live in a society where it is unacceptable for a wise and ancient beagle to write it's caretaker a note to get out of school? I know, I know - first of all, the beagle can't write. But she can give me a look that pleads stay home with me today. She can find ways to tell me that her belly needs extra scratching, that she wants me near. Sometimes she even intervenes on behalf of the cat, as she lets me know that at some point during the day Haiku might need fresh water, and wouldn't it be a trajedy if I wasn't there to make it so?
The Ancient Wonder Beagle has been blind for almost eight years now, a rare blindness disorder, and now that she is also deaf - it's interesting to see her communicate - with me, the other dogs, the cat. She manuevers around in her world in a most remarkable way. To stay home with her today should be a perfectly acceptable thing to do.
But I'm off to the lab. The AWB will understand. She always does.
Oh! That made me cry. Stay home with your furry baby. I'll write you a note!

JanetLee: Thank you. She is an amazing thing, really she is. Sometimes I feel that I should just quit everything and hang with the beagle. I've always told people that everyone needs one - every morning, even now at almost 17 years of age, she is enthusiastic about the day. She's amazing.
