Peace of Mind to a Scientist: Emergency Power and Uninterruptible Power Supplies. I know, I know - we have to wear closed toed shoes and there's a framed photograph of G.W. as you come in the front door - but by God, this afternoon when the power went down in the building, our freezers kept freezing, our shakers kept shaking, and the GC-MS kept it's vacuum. Even more importantly, Catdaddy's tank kept filtering. We made a list today, in order of importance, regarding what pieces of equipment to check during power outages and this is what we came up with:
- Catdaddy's Aquarium
- Shaker/Incubators
- Refrigerator/Freezers
- GC and GC-MS
The cool thing about the building is that we have an abundance of emergency power and UPS where needed (there's even a small UPS on my office computer!). What all of this means is that I can sit in my crumbling abode in LA (for those of you not "in-the-know", LA=Lower Awendaw) on a very stormy night, with only the tornado warning to worry about - with piece of mind that our microorganisms (and, of course, Catdaddy!) are sitting pretty. This is HUGE.
