Another garden that I enjoyed was located in The Crescent, in West Ashley - a beautiful, understated garden. I was especially drawn to this brick porch at the back of the home - with ferns taking root in the cracks between the bricks - this porch looked out towards a small camellia garden.

Of special note in this garden was a spectacular southern magnolia, Magnolia grandiflora, which won the Charleston Horticultural Society's 'Outstanding Tree' residential award back in March of 2008.
From the description of this garden - it would be nice to visit again in the spring, since the person who lives there is often referred to as the 'Bulb Lady'. This is a one acre garden, adjacent to the marshes - the views are quite wonderful.

This garden was very southern - comfortable, lived in - with live oaks dripping in spanish moss, and all along the perimeter was a small fence to keep in a very sweet (and friendly) terrier - and of course I approved of such a fence, which allows the dog to spend time with the gardener. But I had to laugh at the fence - thinking about how The Dan needs a six foot fence (I've grabbed onto her tail to keep her from getting over the 5' part of my fence). Such a small fence is much more civilized I think. But The Dan! She's an awful lot of fun.

That garden does look lived-in. Comfortable, old, and yet still very elegant. I approve.
And I more than approve of The Dan, as you know. :)

Kim, this was a beautiful spot - what you don't see are the water (marsh) views - there was a comfortable, old feel to the garden - it wasnt glamorous or showy, but had a lived in feel.
